Finally I can make Bolognaise

April 10, 2010

(repost from 17/07/09)

In the whole year and 7 months that we have been married, I have not been complimented on my bolognaise sauce. Not because my husband is mean, but because in all honesty, since I barely eat red meat, I can’t cook it well. My mince is usually either too tomatoey or too meat tasting… Neither very fabulous.

On Tuesday night I decided to experiment with my “recipe”. The result, according to Christopher, was “the best mince ever” πŸ™‚ Which is high praise, from my very particular slightly fussy man.

So I thought I’d share my new recipe with my readers, in case I am not the only woman incapable of cooking tasty mince.

INGREDIENTS

500g extra lean mince
1 beef stock cube
1 small onion, chopped
2tbsp tomato puree
1 tbsp olive oil
origanum
taragon
salt & pepper

SautΓ© onion in oil. When onion is clear, add tomato puree and beef cube, add a splash of hot water, to dissolve cube. Add mince and stir well while cooking. Add herbs and salt and pepper. Cook until the mince is cooked thoroughly.

Serve with pasta, I used tagliatelle. And sprinkle with a matchbox amount of cheese.

Since Chris loved it so much, I didn’t get a chance to take photos… But you can take his word for it… It was divine. And really easy to make.

Let me know if you try it, and how it turns out πŸ™‚

My secret ingredient for bolognaise is some diced bacon and a couple of glugs red wine. You can’t go wrong…

Mushrooms are also a great addition, as is grated carrot or babymarrow to bulk up the veggie quotient (you won’t even know it’s there in the final result)

That sounds like a great idea… will try next time… (I sometimes add lentils or baked beans to Lower the GI and stretch the mince a bit too). I usually actually add mushrooms, but I like the carrot idea. Thanks,Marisa!
